The Madurai Kamaraj University has denied any knowledge on the controversy surrounding a professor who "lured" girl students.

The Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID) of the Tamil Nadu police will investigate the case against an Assistant Professor of a college in Aruppukottai, who allegedly tried to persuade girl students to “oblige” university officials for marks and money.

The Aruppukottai police had registered a case against Assistant Professor Nirmala Devi of Devanga Arts College on charges of trying to influence the victims over mobile phone to consider sexual favours to please to university officials.

She was arrested after audio clips of the conversation went viral in the social media.

Considering the sensitive nature of the case, Director-General of Police T.K. Rajendran transferred the case to the CB-CID.

The police had booked her under Sections 370 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code and under the provisions of the Information Technology Act for the conversation she had using the mobile phone.

The complainant also handed over petitions given by the four girls to the college principal last month. The final-year students had accused Ms. Devi of promising them good marks in their semester examination, academic progress and also money in return for undertaking some “urgent assignment” assigned to her by “the higher officials of the MKU.”
