‘Cable TV digitisation by 2016’

Four metros covered in first two phases

Digitisation of Cable TV network in the country will be completed by 2016. First two phases of the four phase programme was over. Phase III of digitisation in the country will be completed by this year end, said G. Muralidhar, Adviser and Regional Head, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Hyderabad Region.

Briefing media persons after presiding over the telecom consumer outreach programme to explain rights and privileges of consumers held here on Tuesday, he said that there will be complete transition to digital cable television in the country by December 2016.

“We had covered four metro cities – Chennai, New Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta and 38 cities that have a population of more than 10 lakh in the first two phases,” he said.

In phase III and IV, towns, municipal corporations and municipalities will be covered by December 2015. Complete digitisation will provide several value added services including broadband for consumers.

He also said that the cable operators should have a designated complaint handling and redressal system. If a consumer is not satisfied with the redressal of his complaint, he can approach the Appellate authority.

Similarly, a consumer can deactivate any value added services at any time through the toll free number 155223, he added.

TRAI Senior Research Officer P.S.R. Murthy explained about mobile number portability, unsolicited commercial communication and complaint redressal mechanism and steps taken by TRAI in connection with unsolicited communications and value added services.

All billing complaints should be resolved within four weeks. Complainants can visit portalwww.tccms.gov.inthat facilitates locating consumer care number, general information number, contact details of the complaint cenre.
