Bypoll cancellation an injustice: Stalin

‘Deferment of poll has merely postponed DMK’s victory’

Asserting that the cancellation of the byelection to the Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar (R.K. Nagar) Assembly constituency was an injustice to the political parties that were in the fray, DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Tuesday said that the development had merely ‘postponed’ the party’s victory.

“The presence of Election Commission officials and paramilitary forces could not prevent the irregularities of the ruling party. The next announcement, be it for the byelection or the general election, will see the DMK emerging victorious. The party cadre’s field work in R.K. Nagar is a testament to DMK’s victory [prospects],” he said in a statement.

Mr. Stalin claimed that the DMK’s political rivals were fully aware that the outcome of the poll would favour the party, and that his campaign in the constituency gave them a clear idea about the pulse of the people.

“That was why the ruling party used its power and distributed money to every voter, and the video evidence of bribery shook the State. We wanted to prevent money distribution and sought action against those who were behind it. But the Election Commission has cancelled the poll,” he rued.

Drawing a parallel between cancelling a bypoll and cancelling an examination, Mr. Stalin said that if a student was found to be engaging in malpractice in the examination hall, action should be taken against that particular candidate alone, as cancelling the examination would be an injustice to other students.

‘Swelling support’

He alleged that both the factions of the AIADMK had indulged in irregularities and stooped to the level of carrying a dummy body of Jayalalithaa because they were unable to digest the swelling support for DMK.
