Four-lane bypass road being laid near Tirunallar will be completed in a year. The road running to a length of three km links Keezha Kasaakudi and Tirunallar and forms first phase of the project.
Located on the western side of Karaial, it is known as western by-pass and eight minor culverts will be constructed.
The facility would avoid traffic congestion especially during important festivals at Tirunallar temple.
Vehicles coming from Puducherry and Karaikal can directly reach Tirunallar, according to V. Shanmugasundaram, Superintending Engineer, Public Works Department.
A median will be set up in the middle of the by-pass. For the first phase, Rs. 16 crore has been sanctioned. Land was acquired for the entire project (first and second phases) at an expenditure of Rs. 13 crore.
Collector E. Vallavan inspected the progress of the work on Tuesday.
He held discussion with officials on alignment of the by-pass.
