The Chennai Corporation has asked owners of buildings with swimming pools, including hotels and clubs, to submit applications for the issuance of no objection certificates.

According to a press release, a government order has been issued framing rules for the regulation and monitoring of swimming pools in buildings. As per the regulatory provisions, the building owner has to obtain a ‘no objection certificate’ to operate the swimming pool from a committee constituted in the Chennai Metropolitan Area. Accordingly, a committee has been constituted with the city Commissioner of Police as its chairman and the Commissioner, Greater Chennai Corporation as member-convener, along with members from various other departments. The civic body has asked persons who have constructed the swimming pool to submit the application to the Chennai Corporation Works Department, Ripon Building for issuance of ‘no objection certificate.’

Random inspections

Officials will visit neighbourhoods to make random inspections of swimming pools. The officials have been asked to screen the facilities and issue a show cause notice to the owner or occupier of that swimming pool, specifying a period within which the defects are to be rectified. The reply to the show cause notice has to be submitted within seven days from the date of receipt of the notice or within the time prescribed in the show cause notice.

The Chennai Corporation will suspend the usage of pool if the defects pointed out in the notice are not rectified within the time given.
