The DMK on Saturday urged Governor K. Rosaiah to prevail upon the Tamil Nadu government to order a CBI probe into the recent collapse of the 11-storey building near Porur in Chennai.
The party treasurer, M.K. Stalin, who led a rally before handing over a memorandum to the Governor, said a CBI probe alone would bring out the truth.
Mr. Stalin accused the government of attempting to suppress the truth, and said the DMK would not rest until a CBI probe was ordered.
He said the Governor had promised him to forward the memorandum to the government.
No soil test
In the memorandum, the DMK alleged that the building was constructed on a waterbody, and no soil test report was submitted to the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority along with the application for permission. “Had the accident happened after the building was handed over to owners, the death toll would have been very high,” it said.
“It is learnt that the area, classified as farmland under the Revenue Department, has clay soil, and requires a foundation of at last 25-metre deep,” the DMK said.
The party said even some ministers took part in the foundation-laying, and it would be only fair to hand over the probe to the CBI.
