Efforts would be taken to construct an auditorium at the Government Music College at Tiruvaiyaru, Thanjavur MP K.Parasuraman said at the inaugural function of the Tamil Isai festival at the college on Thursday.
Mr. Parasuraman lauded the efforts of the Department of Art and Culture in maintaining the college and supporting 236 students pursuing various programmes at the college, and promised that he would look into the demand for a separate boys’ hostel for the college.
At present, the boys were forced to stay on the premises of the Chatram Administration in Thanjavur.
Deputy Director of Art and Culture R.Gunasekaran pointed out that the college was started in 1997 to foster music among children in a professional manner and was offering degree, postgraduate, and doctoral research programmes. Among the four Government Music Colleges in the State, the one in Tiruvaiyaru has the maximum number of students compared to the colleges in Madurai, Coimbatore and Chennai.
Tracing the hoary past of Tiruvaiyaru in the annals of music, Mr.Gunasekaran said the Department of Art and Culture was prepared to support the youth who were interested in pursing a career in music by extending the benefits enjoyed by students in other regular academic institutions such as free laptops and bus pass. Children from modest backgrounds were enjoying the benefit of receiving training from renowned experts in their respective fields almost free of cost, he said. The inaugural of the two-day festival was attended, among others, by Thanjavur MLA M. Rengasamy, Tiruvaiyaru Panchayat Union chairperson Malarkodi Tamilarasan and Town Panchayat Chairperson R. Senthilmani. Principal A. Srividya detailed the achievements of the students of the college and promised to provide the best coaching and facilities for their career development.
