Sujith of Kidampalayam village of Tiruvannamalai district, who fell into an abandoned borewell on Tuesday, died on Wednesday evening. The rescue mission ended with the retrieval of the body from a depth of 47 feet .
The mission that started on Tuesday evening continued all through the night under flood light.
The rescue teams, one led by Manikandan of TVS Community College, Madurai and the other led by Mettupalayam-based professor K.P. Sridhar, reached the spot one after another at midnight and inserted a camera inside the well and found the body of the child. Their models of robotic arms failed to lock the hands of the baby.
After it became obvious that the child was not alive and robotic arms could not lock the baby at the depth of 47 feet, the rescuers decided to try other means to retrieve the body while huge earth movers continued digging a parallel pit. Villagers said that the borewell was 8 inch wide up to a depth of 47 feet and 6 inch wide further.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced a solatium of Rs. 1 lakh for the family of the boy.
