A Class 7 student of the Government Higher Secondary School in Vittampalayam in Tiruchengodu block went into coma after he suffered a head injury when he was reportedly hit by a cricket bat that flew off the hands of a teacher.

P. Visveswaran, 12, a native of Sithampoondi village in Paramathy Velur Taluk, was staying at the government hostel for backward students.

On Sunday, a group of students were playing cricket while the boy was standing on the ground. A. Kuppusamy, economics teacher, who came to take his two-wheeler, asked the boys to bowl two balls to him.

When he attempted to hit the ball, he lost grip of the bat and it flew out of his hands. The bat hit Visveswaran, who suffered an injury in the head. Since the boy showed no signs of distress, the teacher went home, the police said. After an hour, Visveswaran vomited in the hostel and the warden Sathish informed Mr. Kuppusamy. Visveswaran was taken to a private hospital in Tiruchengodu and then to another hospital for scanning. The warden informed the boy’s parents in the evening.

Doctors referred the boy to a private hospital in Salem. As the condition of the boy deteriorated, the boy was shifted to the GH early on Monday.
