BJP toning down criticism of AIADMK

March 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:50 am IST - CHENNAI:

The BJP in Tamil Nadu was going hammer and tongs against the ruling AIADMK just a few weeks ago, but has suddenly toned down its criticism against the State government.

Sources in the BJP indicate that this “temporary lull” in its accusations against the State government could be the result of specific directions from the Central leadership, which does not want to miff the AIADMK when the Parliament session is on.

Statements from BJP leaders attacking the AIADMK have dried up. The last serious criticism was on February 17, when State president Tamilisai Soundararajan expressed her disappointment over the Governor’s address to the Assembly.

“The leaders themselves are taking a cautious stand. Even on Tuesday, the AIADMK backed the Centre in the Rajya Sabha. In a situation where our government needs their support, we naturally have to tone down,” a senior Tamil Nadu BJP leader said, on condition of anonymity.

The BJP is hoping that the AIADMK would extend its support to pass crucial Bills, including the Land Acquisition Bill.

Amit Shah’s rally

The State unit is keenly waiting to see what stand its national president Amit Shah would take in his speech at the Coimbatore rally on Thursday.

If he desists from mentioning anything against the State government, it would be a definite sign of things to come, a party secretary said.
