BJP MP Tarun Vijay said on Tuesday that it was “shameful” that Tamil could not be the language of the Madras High Court even 67 years after Independence.
At a meeting organised by Vetri Tamizhar Peravai to felicitate him for his efforts to propagate Tamil in north India, Mr. Tarun Vijay was seen to be making the right political noises in Chennai when he promised to start a centre at his hometown, Deharadun, to promote Tamil. The centre would function from his residence.
The BJP MP also revealed that the efforts to distribute copies of the great Tamil work Tirukkural to students in north India would begin in January, and there was a plan to give it to 500 educational institutions.
“I have no agenda or politics behind my efforts. I believe that Tirukkural is the book of India,” he said.
Lyricist and Peravai founder Vairamuthu said Mr. Tarun Vijay had demolished the perception that north Indians were against Tamil. “Even though the land of the Tamils, which once stretched between Kanyakumari to Tirupati, had shrunk, Tamils survived because of their language,” he said.
