Bar examination put off again in Chennai

March 27, 2011 03:29 am | Updated 03:29 am IST - New Delhi:

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has once again put off the All-India Bar Examination (AIBE), scheduled to be held in Chennai on March 27.

In a press release, the BCI said: “The BCI has been approached and requested by the State government to postpone the AIBE in Chennai in light of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Elections that are to take place shortly. The BCI is coordinating with the State government to fix a revised date and will communicate the same to candidates shortly. Revised admit cards along with the venue details will be made available to all candidates and adequate notice of the same will be available to all candidates.”

The AIBE was held on March 6 across 26 cities barring Chennai, where it was postponed following violence intended to disturb the examination. Around 71 per cent of about 22,000 candidates who took the AIBE were declared successful. This was the first time such an entry-level examination was held to assess a candidate's capabilities as lawyer at the basic level and to set a minimum standard for admission to the practice of law. Only a pass in this examination will enable the advocate to practise the profession.
