As a precursor to the nationwide strike called by the Central trade unions on Wednesday (September 2), bank employees staged a demonstration at Palayamkottai on Tuesday.

Led by All India Bank Employees’ Association’s Tirunelveli district president Ganesan, around 200 bank employees participated in the demonstration organised in front of Canara Bank’s Palayamkottai branch.

Over 5 lakh bank employees would participate in the nationwide strike, they said.

The protestors said the Centre should not privatize the public sector undertakings and appoint contract workers in permanent jobs. All India Fund should be created to protect the welfare of unorganised sector labourers.

While reverting back to the old pension scheme, every worker retiring from government service should be given pension.

Ceiling in the bonus and also gratuity should be waived.

Extra efforts should be put in to recover the debts taken by the corporate houses and the defaulters should be declared as ‘criminals.’

Increase in the Foreign Direct Investment Cap in public sector undertakings should not be allowed, they said.
