Ban on smoking

January 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST

It is good to see that the Kerala government has banned smoking and consumption of alcohol on government premises.

Employees not complying with the order would be suspended from government service.

Indicators

Barricades and road-dividers are put up to make motorists slow down their vehicles and regulate the traffic in Kumbakonam and nearby areas.

But there is no indicator or red lamp on both sides.

As a result, some motorists hit the barricades or the road-dividers. Indicators on both sides should be installed.

Tamil culture

Efforts of the government in making records of palm leaves, ancient texts and manuscripts easily accessible to all through an upgraded web site will go a long way in spreading the glory of Tamil Nadu and values of culture. Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has thus done an extraordinary task for development of Tamil language and Tamil cultural values.

DPC godowns

Though plan to construct DPC godowns at various places may be good, storage spaces in villages should be multi-purpose.

They should make the villages development clusters.

STC buses

State Transport Corporation staff should fill diesel in buses either at the starting or the destination point.

But making passengers to wait inside buses while the tank is filled is unjustified. The STC must stop this practice.

Worthy of emulation

The Tiruchi City Police Commissioner has launched a web site offering information online regarding phone/ mobile numbers of officers, police stations, emergency contact numbers of women/ child helpline, fire services and other utilities. This system could be emulated by SPs all over the State.

Better infrastructure

The Kumbakonam railway station has been renovated. But the parking lot is inadequate for commuters.

A multi-level parking lot should be constructed for parking vehicles as in Tiruchi railway junction.

Holidays

Four continuous holidays for Pongal festival for banks and government offices is unnecessary. People are put to a lot of inconvenience.

A single day holiday as in post offices is sufficient for celebrating Pongal. In future, such unnecessary holidays should be restricted.

Kumbakonam.
