Automation of exam system introduced

Thiruvalluvar University is introducing automation in the examination system in a phased manner.

Presenting the annual report at the 10th convocation on Tuesday, P. Gunasekaran, V-C of the university, said as part of this initiative, OMR sheets with pre-printed students’ particulars, processing of valuation and publication of results, online registration of students, submission of internal marks and computerised hall tickets generation have been introduced.

Steps have been taken to clear backlog of printing mark sheets and other certificates.

As many as 2,16,828 mark sheets, degree certificates and provisional certificates pending since 2009 have been distributed, he said,

“Additionally, 1,03,626 mark sheets, consolidated mark sheets and provisional certificates for students who had written last semester exams were printed and distributed,” he added.

Another 40,000 mark sheets, consolidated mark sheets, provisional certificates, degrees for students of old batches were also handed over, while all mark sheets for last year students have been completed.

In the last two years, there has been considerable increase in Ph.D enrolment at the university.

The V-C said the number of candidates registered in Ph.D programme was 310 during the last two years - more than one-third of candidates registered from inception of the university.

“Similarly, the university has recognised 118 and 243 teachers as Ph.D supervisors and M.Phil supervisors respectively during the last two years,” he stated.

This was more than 50 per cent of the total number of teachers recognised as supervisors from the beginning of this university.

Professor Gunasekaran pointed out that B. Vidhya, a student of Department of Chemistry, Muthurangam Government Arts College, was selected for the Tamil Nadu Study Abroad Programme for the academic year 2014-15 to study at Sheffield Hallam University, UK.

He outlined various grants received from the State government and other funding agencies for infrastructure, research projects and conferences.
