The Ministry of Handloom and Textiles will take steps for setting up a weaving and design training centre in Ariyalur district for imparting training to the handloom weavers.
The proposed training centre will be attached to the Centre at Kumbakonam. The proposal will be taken to the notice of the Chief Minister for getting her approval, said S. Gokula Indira, Minister for Handlooms and Textiles, here on Tuesday.
The Minister said 28 handloom cooperative societies were functioning in Jayamkondam and Andimadam areas and the proposed training centre would immensely benefit them.
Ms. Indira inspected the handloom items produced by the weavers of Sengunthapuram Sri Sundara Vinayagar Cotton, Silk and Handloom Weavers Cooperative Producers Society in Jayamkondam union and Variyangal Mudaliar Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society in Andimadam union and enquired about the quality of saris and dhotis.
She held discussions with the directors and members of these societies and made enquiries about their demands.
At the society in Andimadam, the Minister unveiled the portrait of the former manager Ranganatha Iyer.
The Minister visited the photo exhibition got up by the State Information and Public Relations Department in Sengunthapuram Society.
The Minister was accompanied by Harmandar Singh, Principal Secretary, Handlooms and Textiles; U. Sagayam, Managing Director of Co-optex; G. Prakash, Director of Handlooms; and E. Saravanavelraj, Collector.

Ms.Indira visited the Handloom Silk Co-operative societies at Kumbakonam and Thirubuvanam, and the weavers training centre.
She said that Kumbkonam handloom division comprises silk weavers societies in Thanjavur, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts.
There are a total of 26,622 weavers in the division, of them 15,342 are members in 47 handloom silk weavers’ co-operative societies. The minister inspected Thirubuvanam Silk Handloom Co-operative Society (Thico silks), Cholan Handloom silk weavers’ co-operative society and Darasuram co-operative society and named new saris as “Amma silk”, “Akshaya silk” and “Aradhana silk”.
