The State government should take steps to contain spiralling prices of construction materials to protect the construction industry.
This appeal was made at a State-level conference of the Construction Workers’ Association here on Sunday.
“Sharp hike in the cost of construction materials has been posing a grave threat to the construction industry. Controlling the prices of construction materials is need of the hour,” it was stressed at the conference.
The association’s all India general secretary Kumarasamy alleged that “anti-labour” activities were in full swing in the State.
Twenty Tamil workers were shot dead by the Andhra police. Ten workers died in a sewage water tank collapse at a tannery in Vellore. There was no reaction to all these deaths from the State government, he alleged.
The Central government had already tried to snatch the rights of farmers through its land acquisition act, Mr. Kumarasamy added.
Ensuring the supply of 20 litres of protected drinking water to all, filling existing vacancies in the labour welfare board and supplying PDS goods to migratory workers from other States were their other demands.
