Anti-nuclear activist arrested in Theni

Anti-nuclear activist S. Mukilan, who has been staging a dharna in front of the collectorate here since Monday morning without permission, was arrested on Tuesday.

He was staging protest alleging that police manhandled him on Sunday.

When he continued his dharna till 2.30 p.m. on Monday, the Theni police summoned him to hospital for medical check up, producing a letter. However, he refused to come and insisted that they produce an arrest warrant.

He was then arrested and brought to the Theni police station for inquiry. He raised slogans against AIADMK candidate in Bodinaickanur Assembly constituency, O. Paneerselvam and the police before boarding the police van.

Earlier, his supporters and lawyers met him at the collectorate.

Mukilan and his friends had, on Sunday, distributed pamphlets against Mr. Paneerselvam and AIADMK candidate for Tiruchendur constituency Sarath Kumar urging people to defeat them in the elections. Mukilan had also asked the people to defeat AIADMK leader Jayalalitha and DMK president M. Karunanidhi.

The Bodi police had registered a case against Mukilan and Vikash (19) of Balarengapuram in Madurai, Sridhar (30) of Thathaneri in Madurai and Selvan of Thevaram on the charges of poll code violations.

They were arrested on Sunday and released on bail immediately.

However, Mukilan claimed that police had manhandled him on Sunday, and began the dharna.
