As part of a two-day anti-dengue operation, City Municipal Corporation conservancy workers went on a door-to-door collection of unused materials in 30 wards here on Saturday.
Also, larvicide solution that prevents breeding of mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya was poured into water stored in containers in houses.
With rainy season on, the Corporation has initiated the measure to prevent outbreak of waterborne diseases.
It asked people to place unused materials, including plastics, cement pipes, coconut shells, and broken utensils outside their houses so that workers could collect them between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, 30 wards in Kondalampatty and Hasthampatti Zone were covered while the remaining 30 wards in Suramangalam and Ammapet would be covered on Sunday.
Collected
Workers collected unused materials, vehicle tyres, torn clothes and other materials, which officials said would be disposed of in Erumapalayam dump yard.
People were also asked not to store water in open containers.
They were also asked to immediately visit the nearby health centre or the Government Hospital if they were suffering from fever continuously.
Though the campaign yielded good response, residents in many streets said that workers did not turn up to collect the waste materials.
A few residents also said that they were unaware of the campaign until workers turned up and asked for unused materials.
They said that if they had been given prior information, they could have collected the materials and kept them outside their houses, to be taken away and disposed of, in accordance with the Corporation’s plan.
Civic body officials, however, said that shortage of human resource is an issue and a mass campaign would be carried out later.
