Anna University officials on Wednesday announced that the general academic counselling will begin on Monday. Counselling was earlier set to begin on June 27 but was delayed as the Supreme Court granted a week's time to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to clear pending applications.

According to officials of the AICTE, the State government had been sanctioned permission to admit students to seven new colleges, including one government college. But Anna University officials had said that only one college in Gummidipoondi had received the permission letter.

Counselling for over 1.68 lakh applicants in engineering courses in the State is a much awaited event. The University had already held counselling for special categories such as the ex-servicemen, candidates with disabilities and sportspersons.

On each day of general counselling, around 5,000 students are expected to come to the University. As per the earlier schedule the entire process was to have been completed by July 27. Classes were expected to begin on August 1.

Anna University officials said they had not yet received any details about the number of seats surrendered in various courses.
