The Anna Cooperative Spinning Mill near here is being modernised at a cost of Rs.30.3 crore to improve production and quality of yarn, according to S. Gokula Indira, Minister for Handlooms and Textiles.
Inspecting the modernisation work at the mill on Friday, she said the Tamil Nadu government had granted Rs.148 crore to modernise six cooperative spinning mills in the State.
The first phase of modernisation was over and the second phase was under progress at Andipatti.
“Old machinery will be replaced with modern ones and production line modernised. After the completion of second phase, yarn production per month will be enhanced to 2.5 lakh kg from the existing 1.5 lakh kg. Profit will catapult to Rs.4 crore a year.”
An ultra modern quality control lab was established at a cost of Rs.65 lakh in the mill recently, the Minister said and added that the lab had so far tested 431 cotton samples and 72 yarn samples.
Established in 1984, the mill has been meeting the yarn requirement for manufacturing priceless dhotis, saris and school units and for Cooptex.
On the proposed hi-tech park in Andipatti, she said that at least 25 per cent of project cost should be contributed by individuals to set up a unit in the hi-tech park and to avail 75 per cent of State and Central government’s share. Private contribution was necessary for functioning of the park, the Minister pointed out.
