The All India Women Democratic Freedom Party has fielded Malliga, formerly a member of a self-help group, as its first electoral candidate. The party itself was registered only on April 22, but it hopes to make a difference in the lives of women. The party’s letter head has its name in Tamil, Hindi and English, as it wants to establish that every one should learn all languages, says its founder general secretary M.G. Chandran. Malliga, who believes she can make a difference, has chosen the activist route to fight for the rights of women, eradicate alcoholism, and ensure a roof over the head of poor and middle class families. She has been assigned a lamp post as the election symbol. She has five other women, all office bearers of the party, helping her in the campaign.
