CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi on Friday asserted that he had no issues in continuing the alliance with the Congress.
Answering a volley of questions on the status of the DMK-Congress ties, Mr. Karunanidhi, who earlier chaired an emergency meeting of the party's high-level committee, told reporters that he had no regrets about the Congress not helping the party on the 2G spectrum allocation case.
To another query, the DMK leader replied that his party never believed that the government should intervene in judicial matters. Asked about his earlier reported statement that the Congress had not always respected the DMK, he responded that on some occasions and in some context, he might have made such a statement. “You cannot keep on raising it.”
To a question on the Congress journal Sandesh criticising the DMK for the defeat in the Assembly elections, Mr. Karunanidhi said the journal would have explained that the 2G spectrum issue was blown out of proportion by vested interests.
On the Opposition's demand for the resignation of Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran on the spectrum issue, the DMK leader wondered “when has the Opposition not demanded it?”
A resolution, adopted by the party committee, termed “totally wrong” the inclusion of the names of DMK MP Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV Managing Director Sharad Kumar by the Central Bureau of Investigation in its charge sheet. The CBI linking the loan taken by the TV company with the spectrum allocation was condemnable. Legal experts had opined that it was contrary to law to seek the arrest of a person who had not been arrested during investigation when the person appeared in response to a court summons. This would be highlighted in the appeal before the Supreme Court, the resolution stated.
Asked whether the condemnation of the CBI could be construed as condemnation of the Prime Minister as the CBI came under his control, the DMK leader said: “It is your liberty. You can write that.”
