E.R. Manimaran (40), the Alangudi town secretary of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, was murdered by a group of unidentified persons near a tea-stall at Alangudi on Monday.
Police said that previous enmity was the cause behind the crime. The culprits possessing deadly weapons came by two-wheelers and attacked Manimaran who suffered grievous injuries on the head, wrist and shoulder. He succumbed to the injuries on the spot, police said.
Shop-keepers downed shutters and schools and banks in Alangudi were immediately closed. Bus services between Alangudi and other parts of the district remained suspended.
Inspector General of Police, Central Zone Karan Singha, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tiruchi Range A.G. Pon Manickavel, Superintendent of Police, Pudukottai Muthusamy and Superintendent of Police A. Kaliyamurthy rushed to the spot to ensure law and order.
Pickets were posted in various parts of the town. The body was sent to the Government Headquarters Hospital, Pudukottai, for post mortem.
It may be recalled former AIADMK Minister, Alangudi A. Venkatachalam was murdered in his native Vadakadu village near Alangudi on October 7.
