Members of the ruling AIADMK and the principal opposition DMK were at loggerheads in the Assembly on Thursday yet again on the issue of protecting the State’s rights in the Cauvery river water and Mullaperiyar dam disputes, with both parties pointing fingers at each other’s shortcomings while handling these issues.

The debate branched out from the speech of DMK MLA Palanivel Thiagarajan, who urged the government to protect the State’s rights.

Deputy Chief Minister and Leader of the House O. Panneerselvam contended that their late leader Jayalalithaa was the best Chief Minister the State ever had in terms of protecting its rights.

Elaborating on the efforts taken by Jayalalithaa for publishing the final award of the Cauvery Tribunal in the government gazette, Mr. Panneerselvam criticised the DMK saying it did not contribute muchto both the causes.
