Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Sanjeev Kumar passed away following prolonged illness here on Sunday. He was 55.
The 1986-batch IPS officer, a native of Jharkhand, served in various capacities in the State, including a nine-year stint in the caste-sensitive southern districts. Sanjeev Kumar was battling cancer for about two years and died in a private hospital where he was admitted after his health condition deteriorated, police sources said.
Prior to serving as Deputy Inspector General of Police in Ramanathapuram and Tirunelveli Ranges and then as Inspector-General of Police of South Zone between 2000-09, he was deputed to West Asia as part of a Research & Analysis (RAW) mission.
A statement issued by the police headquarters said the South Zone was the toughest among the four zones in the State and Sanjeev Kumar guided junior officers to handle problems of Maoists in Theni and Dindigul districts. He is survived by his wife Kuntal Kumar and son Kushgra Kumar.
