Thuraiyur is seeing rapid development, and mushrooming residential colonies on the outskirts of the town, particularly on the Thuraiyur-Musiri highway, stands testimony to it.
The town is also seeing a sharp rise in the number of vehicles which adds to the traffic chaos.
This has forced highway authorities to set up concrete makeshift medians on the centre of Tiruchi Main Road.
The one-km-long stretch extending from the roundabout in the town to the new bus stand is one of the most accident-prone areas as a number of buses, vans, and autorickshaws pass through the stretch.
While one side of the main road abuts the bank of Chinna Eri, the other side of the road has a lot of residential by-lanes branching off from the road.
There are openings at multiple places on the concrete medians to allow direct access for vehicles from the residential areas to cross the road.
A cross section of residents point out that the concrete medians should be set up without any openings to ensure road safety. “Direct access to the ‘eri’ side of the road from residential areas and vice-versa makes the entire stretch unsafe,” they said. The median can be open at select one or two places but not near each and every residential by-lane branching off from the main road, they point out.
The book exhibition organised by the district administration has been attracting a large number of people from across the district. Apart from the display of books, various programmes including literature-based lectures and seminars have also been organised.
Students of various colleges in and around Perambalur have been evincing interest in visiting the exhibition, and it has evoked good response from citizens from all walks of life.
