The Madras High Court Bench here on Thursday dismissed a public interest litigation petition seeking a direction to the Home Secretary and Director General of Police to refrain from taking the protesters in support of Jallikattu into "illegal custody" and causing "nuisance" to them in an attempt to "dilute the agitations" across the State.

A Division Bench of Justices A. Selvam and P. Kalaiyarasan dismissed the plea on the ground that the plea was not legally maintainable. They also recorded the submission of Special Government Pleader M. Govindan that the petitioner had filed the case with false allegations and that no one had been taken into illegal custody.

"This is a publicity interest litigation and not a bonafide public interest litigation. The government is taking all efforts to resolve the issue and the Chief Minister has gone to Delhi today to meet the Prime Minister, the SGP told the court and urged it to dismiss the case right at the admission stage itself.
