Collector hears views of public on expansion of limestone mining

The proposed expansion of the limestone mining project by the Department of Mining in Perianagalur village in Ariyalur district will not affect the people as all precautionary steps will be taken to protect the safety and welfare of the people and also to prevent pollution, said Collector T. K. Ponnusamy, here on Tuesday.

Presiding over the meeting convened by the Departments of Mining and also Environment to hear the public's views on the proposed expansion project, the Collector said limestone mining in the village was being carried out for more than three decades and pointed out that a recent survey had revealed that there was no pollution caused by the limestone mining .

He said steps were taken to grow trees in the limestone mining area and also to prevent dust pollution if any and to provide necessary infrastructure facilities for the village. This expansion project will pave way for more employment opportunities to the local people and new workers would be recruited for mining expansion work.

R. Pichai, District Revenue Officer, Jeevarathinam, Revenue Divisional Officer, A. Rangasamy, District Environmental Engineer, Sumathababu, Thillainayagagam and other officials from the Department of Geology and Mining, attended the meeting. The local panchayat members and public participated in the meeting and aired their grievances and suggestions.
