Eight fishermen of Arockiyapuram in Kanyakumari district were injured after they were allegedly attacked by another group of fishermen at mid-sea on Saturday.
A week ago, on the evening of Easter Sunday, some fishermen of Kottapuli in the district went to nearby Vattakottai in Kanyakumari. They picked a quarrel with another group from Arockiyapuram. The row led to a clash.
Though the issue was sorted out, a group from Kottapuli went to Arockiyapuram in fibreglass boats and a mini-lorry on the same night and attacked the fishermen. As the Arockiyapuram fishermen retaliated, the attackers fled, leaving behind one of their boats and the vehicle.
N. Manivannan, Superintendent of Police, Kanyakumari, deployed armed policemen in the coastal village, and was keen on registering a case. But, in the meantime, the issue was “settled amicably” with the intervention of the parish priests of both villages and leaders of the fishermen community. The fibreglass boat and the mini-lorry were returned to the Kottapuli fishermen.
On Saturday, the Kottapuli fishermen in five fibreglass boats intercepted and attacked Arockiyapuram fishermen on high seas when they were returning to the shore in two boats after fishing.
On reaching the shore, they were rushed to the Kanyakumari Government Hospital.
