74th anniversary of ‘Quit India Movement’ observed

The 74th anniversary of Quit India Movement, which was launched by the father of nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was observed at Kadalaiyur near Kovilpatti on Monday.

The contributions of freedom fighters were remembered on the occasion. It was on the same day in 1942, the Quit India Movement was organized and led by Veyilukanda Muthaliyar, a freedom fighter, in protest against the British rule in India.

Sankaralinga Muthaliyar, who took part in the struggle, sacrificed his life after he was gunned down by the British.

A few others in the struggle also fell victims to the gun fire, P. Muthu Murugan, founder, Bharathiyar Memorial Trust, Kovilpatti, who took part in the programme, said.

In commemoration of the sacrifices of freedom fighters, floral tributes were paid to the portrait of late Veyilukanda Muthaliyar at his memorial in Kadaliyur.

Kovilpatti Sub Collector S. Kannabiran, Kovilpatti Deputy Superintendent of Police Murugavel, Kovilpatti District Educational Officer, Chellaiah paid homage.

The programme was organised by Kadaliyur Freedom Fighters’ Trust.
