5 held for sexual assault of 10-year-old Dalit girl

Police here arrested five persons including four auto drivers on charge of sexual assault of a 10-year-old Dalit girl.

The police gave the names of the arrested as Samayan (45), the girl’s uncle, and auto rickshaw drivers – Mohammed Yasin (32), Syed Abudakir (33), Nowshadkhan (32) and Mohamed Riaz (31) at Ilayankudi on Sunday.

The horrifying crime had reportedly occurred in October 2012. According to a complaint lodged by the District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Chairman T. Balraj, the police arrested them and produced before the Ilayankudi JM and lodged in Sivaganga sub-jail.

Detailing the horror story, District Probation Officer (Social Defence) N.Sivakumar said the girl was subjected to sexual assault came to light on Saturday, when the CWC was called to take custody of the child after she was rescued by All Women Police Station Inspector Kumari on the night of February 28 in Sivaganga.

He said the enormity of the cruelty came to the fore on Saturday, when the girl was taken to the Sivaganga Medical College hospital for examination. Refusing to allow the doctors to touch her, she became hysterical and screamed saying many men abused her and she would bleed. As she offered to identify the culprits, she was taken to Ilayankudi bus stand on Saturday night itself, Mr Sivakumar said.
