The district education department has identified 42 nursery and primary schools in Kancheepuram district that are functioning without recognition certificates, and has asked parents not to enrol their children in these institutions.
Shanthi, chief education officer, Kancheepuram district, said in a press release that as per the provisions of the RTE Act, no school other than a school established, owned or controlled by the government or a local authority, shall be established or function without obtaining a certificate of recognition from the authorities. A check by the department found that classes from LKG to class V were being conducted in 42 nursery and primary schools in the revenue district without obtaining or validating recognition certificates.
Of these, 20 schools, including 10 institutions run under the banner of a Chennai-based chain of nursery and primary schools, function in the southern suburbs of Chennai.
Of the other 22, six functions in and around Kancheepuram municipal area, five in and around Kundrathur area, four in Chengalpattu area, three each in Sriperumpudur and Kattankolathur areas and one in Maduranthakam.
