3-year RI for 4 drug peddlers

A gang of four persons, who brought a huge quantity of ganja from Andhra Pradesh, was sentenced to three years' rigorous imprisonment by a special court here.

They were nabbed on July 2, 2008, following a tip-off by a sub-inspector of Ennore Police Station. The four, who hail from Madurai, were carrying ganja from Andhra Pradesh to Chennai in Dehradun Express. They got down at Wimco Nagar signal and proceeded to Tiruvottriyur. On seeing the police, they attempted to flee and were later apprehended. Sixty-four kg of ganja was recovered from their bags. They were arrested and charged under provisions of Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act.

V.Ramamurthy, Judge of II Additional Special Court for NDPS cases sentenced them to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.20,000 each.
