Days after India and Sri Lanka repatriated fishermen who were in each other’s country, 38 Indian fishermen were caught engaging in allegedly illegal fishing activity in Sri Lankan waters. The Sri Lankan Navy arrested on Wednesday arrested them off Delft islands, near Jaffna in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province.

The arrests come immediately after India and Sri Lanka repatriated fishermen who were in each other’s custody on charges of poaching. The decision to release the fishermen came after Sri Lankan Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne’s recent visit to New Delhi.

Following that, on January 27, fishermen of both countries met in Chennai and said they had reached an agreement.
