Twenty-six fishermen from Thoothoor in Kanyakumai district, who were arrested by Bangladesh Navy on December 9, were set free by a court on Thursday, said a release from Union Minister of State for Shipping and Highways Pon Radhakrishnan here.

The release said that the court enlarged the fishermen following efforts of the Government of India through the Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh. Their release was conveyed to the Minister’s office by J.B. Singh, Indian High Commissioner.

The Minister said that efforts were on to get the fishermen home as early as possible through diplomatic channels.

P. Justin Antony, founder-president of the Tamil Nadu Fishermen Development Trust, also confirmed the fishermen’s release by the court in Bangladesh. They would return home after overhauling their boats, Mr. Antony said.
