24,000 electors ‘absent’

Proof of identity must for voters

The Chennai District Election Office has compiled a list of over 24,000 electors who are absent at the Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly constituency because of shifting of residence or owing to duplicate entry on the rolls.

“This is in addition to the 45,819 electors whose names were deleted from the rolls a few weeks ago,” said an official. The number of electors on the rolls in the constituency is 2.28 lakh.

The electors on the list compiled by the commission will be subjected to screening by the polling officers during the poll. Such electors’ names on the roll are likely to facilitate impersonation.

On the day of poll, electors on the list will be asked to produce proof of identification. The presiding officer will verify the identification document and the details will be registered by the polling officer in the register of voters in Form 17A.

“Many of the electors may be registered in the roll at more than one place,” said an official.

The Chennai District Election Office has already noticed that the names of some dead electors continued to be there on the electoral rolls.

In some such cases, the photo roll may not have the photo of electors. This is expected to provide an opportunity for impersonation.

In a bid to prevent impersonation of such electors at the time of bypoll, the Election Commission has directed the Chennai district election office to supply the list of such electors to each of the presiding officers in the polling stations.

Polling officers will collect the thumb impression of such electors in addition to signature in the register of voters (Form 17A). The presiding Officer will maintain a record of the electors.

Chennai District Election Office will also photograph such electors during the poll, said an official.
