AIADMK interim general secretary V.K. Sasikala’s first day in prison was no different from any other inmate serving a simple imprisonment sentence. H.N. Sathyanarayana Rao, Director General of Police (Prisons) clarified on Thursday that she was not accorded any special privileges.

“We are not giving her any special treatment. As she is undergoing simple imprisonment, she does not have to work. However if she wants, she can take up activities like making candles,” said a prison official.

‘Ragi- based food’

Sources said Ms Sasikala was provided “ragi-based food” for dinner on Wednesday. On Thursday, she had puliyodharai (tamarind rice) for breakfast.

‘Seen strolling’

“Later in the day, she was spotted wearing a white sari while taking a stroll on the prison grounds,” said a source from the prison department.

On Wednesday evening around 6.30 p.m., Ms. Sasikala and her co-accused J. Elavarasi were taken into the women’s cell by jail officials. A few minutes later, another co-accused, V.N. Sudhakaran was taken into the prison premises.

Pugazhendi, AIADMK, Karnataka State Secretary said that before she entered the prison grounds on Wednesday evening, Ms. Sasikala told her cadres not to worry. “She assured me that victory would be on our side,” he said.
