A sailing expedition by the Army Adventure Club ran into trouble on Monday after two boats with 12 sailors got stranded off Nagapattinam following rough weather. The boats were towed to the Karaikal port with the help of fishing boats.

The sailors were on an expedition from Chennai to Kochi when their boats were stranded 17 nautical miles off Nagapattinam.

According to Commandant Udhal Singh, Coast Guard Station, Karaikal, the station received information about the stranded boats. “Coast Guard ship Rajshree was put on standby, and we liaised with local fishing boats that were at sea around that time. The two boats were escorted to safety to Karaikal around 7 p.m.,” Commandant Singh told The Hindu . The Coast Guard headquarters had issued an advisory to the Army Adventure Club to call off the expedition until the weather improved, he said.
