Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Friday told the Congress Working Committee that the Justice B.N. Srikrishna Committee, appointed by the Centre to go into the Telangana issue, was well received by all sections (those from the Telangana and Andhra/Rayalaseema regions). Peace had returned to the State and there was no violence or major agitations.

All sections of the people had even welcomed the selection of other members of the committee, he told the CWC meeting here. Congress president Sonia Gandhi had earlier asked him to brief the CWC on the issue. The terms of reference of the committee would be released in a day or two, Congress sources said quoting him.

Mr. Chidambaram said the committee had been set up pursuant to the statements made by him on December 9, 2009 and December 23, 2009 and the meeting with the eight recognised political parties of Andhra Pradesh on January 5, 2010.

At the meeting, CWC member and former Union Minister G. Venkataswamy thanked Ms. Gandhi for appointing the committee and taking steps for creation of Telangana. However she simply took it with a smile, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, who met various leaders here, including Ms. Gandhi and Mr. Chidambaram, said they were very particular about the complete return of peace, normal functioning of the government machinery and students writing their examinations well. They were worried about the government’s monetary loss and the problems faced by the government departments.
