Expressing dismay and disappointment over the stand taken by India on climate change, the Samajwadi Party today said the country should not be made to pay for the mess created by the developed nations.
“I am dismayed and disappointed with the stand taken by my friend and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh. We are not a developed nationation. While the western countries have created a mess, they expect us to pay for it,” SP general secretary Amar Singh, said.
Drawing an analogy from Chemistry, he said there were three kinds of nations-— unsaturated, saturated and supersaturated.
“The western world is supersaturated while India is unsaturated. Give us an opportunity to become saturated,” he said.
Strongly denouncing Mr. Ramesh’s announcement of unilateral emission intensity cuts by 25 per cent, Mr. Singh said India’s case was different from that of China as the latter could announce anything and then not follow it.
“This government is of, for and by contradictions,” he said, adding that India’s stand was “detrimental” to its interests.
He said Mr. Ramesh was acting more as a “global citizen than an Indian citizen”.
