Sonia asks govt to provide relief to common man

Voicing concern over rising prices, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday asked the government to make all efforts to provide relief to the common man.

“These days, one of my worries is related to price rise.

The common man is being burdened due to it.... Government should try to take every step needed to provide relief to the common man. This can be possible with cooperation from both the Centre and the states,” the Congress chief said in her speech which was read out at a rally here.

Ms. Gandhi was to address the public meeting but could not make it due to her ill health.

Ms. Gandhi said, “I admit that the government also has a lot of difficulties and this problem is there in almost all the countries. But when the whole world was passing through economic recession, we remained untouched to a large extent.”

The government has come under severe attack for the continued rise in prices and inflation is hovering around the double-digit mark.

Inflation for the month of September stood at 9.72 per cent and food inflation in the country touched a nine-month high of 12.21 per cent in the week ended October 22, on the back of costlier vegetables, pulses and milk.
