Two drama collections of eminent theatre personality Sitanath Lahkar were released on Sunday.
The two collections, published by famous theatre group Samahar Natya Gosthee, contain 10 stage dramas written by Dr. Lahkar. These contain the plays written between 1989 and 2004.
The first book Natyargha-2 , released by Sahitya Akademi Awardee novelist Nirupama Borgohain, contains five stage plays — Aadhaarshila (1989), Agnigarbha (1993), Aakraman (1994), Trikalagya (1995) and Juddhakaal (2006).
In her speech, Ms. Borgohain said: “Dr. Lahkar’s plays reflect his social concern. They depict social problems so realistically that they leave an impact on people’s mind. I hope that with publication of the plays, these will be enacted more widely now.”
The second book Natyargha-3 was released by renowned poet-lyricist Amarjyoti Choudhury. It has five stage plays — Mahanayak (2010), Baghabondi (2011), Junj (2012), Biplovee Vivekananda (2013) and Sankat (2014).
“Though I have not got the chance to watch any of his dramas, I have read his plays. They compel you to think about society. In today’s time, when our children are not aware of our surroundings, these dramas can play a very important role in making them aware of the problems in society,” Mr. Choudhury said.
Earlier, talking about the two books, Dr. Lahkar said the dramas dealt with the problems in society and some important transitions in the history from 1949 to 2014.
“Drama is a mighty weapon that can be either used for the greatest good or detriment of society. My plays are not for entertainment alone,” he added.
