The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre, the CBI and Essar on a PIL petition seeking a probe into a ‘political-bureaucrat-corporate nexus’ exposed in email leaks where the corporate house allegedly granted favour to Ministers and bureaucrats for promoting its business.

A three-judge Bench issued notices and sought response of the parties within six weeks on the PIL filed by NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL).

The Bench initially asked advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for CPIL, to disclose his source of information in a sealed cover. Mr. Bhushan said he was unwilling to part with the information as the source was a whistleblower who had already been physically threatened.

The Bench, also comprising Justices Kurian Joseph and R. Banumathi, asked Mr. Bhushan if there was any link between the favours granted by the bureaucrats and politicians to the group and reciprocation of the same. Mr. Bhushan said the officials and Ministers who received favours, knew that they have been dealing with the files of the particular company in their professional capacity.

He also referred to various email communications to claim there has been a nexus among politicians, bureaucrats and the company.
