Sailor dies battling fire on INS Viraat

A sailor who suffered injuries while combating a minor fire and steam leak in one of the boiler rooms of INS Viraat on Sunday afternoon succumbed to his injuries at the Goa naval hospital later in the day.

According to naval sources, a steam leak and a minor fire was reported in one of the ship’s boiler rooms while the INS Viraat was on routine deployment in Goa.

“While the flame was quickly brought under control, four sailors who were present at the scene and combating the fire, sustained injuries. One of them, Chief Engineering Mechanic Ashu Singh was in critical condition after inhaling smoke. A naval spokesperson said, “He was shifted to the naval hospital in Goa, where he also suffered a cardiac arrest.”

The other three sailors are under treatment and out of danger.
