Rumblings in Gujarat Congress over Rajya Sabha poll nominations

Senior Congress leader Sonal Patel resigned as Gujarat Pradesh Mahila Congress president on Monday after the party nominated Amee Yagnik for the Rajya Sabha seat.

Ms. Patel has sent her resignation to the party leaders. “I have resigned due to personal reasons,” she said.

“There will be many more resignations because the high command has selected Amee Yagnik, who joined the party only in 2012,” a party leader said.

The party’s choice for two Rajya Sabha seats from the State has not gone down well with the cadres as more than 20 leaders were lobbying for a nomination.

Apart from Ms. Yagnik, the Congress has fielded former Union Minister and tribal leader Naran Rathwa. The party had apparently decided against fielding those who lost the Assembly polls last year.

The party’s top four leader Shaktisinh Gohil, Arjun Modhwadia, Sidhdharth Patel and Tushar Chaudhary lost the polls from their respective Assembly seats.
