River hovers near danger mark at Bhadrachalam

July 12, 2016 12:36 am | Updated 12:36 am IST - KHAMMAM:

The water level in the Godavari hovered near the danger mark at Bhadrachalam town on Monday night with all its tributaries in spate in the upper reaches of the river posing flood threat to around 19 villages comprising several riverside habitations in the Bhadrachalam division.

The water level in the river rose rapidly from 23 feet on Sunday evening to 50 feet on Monday night owing to the copious inflows from the catchment areas of the river.

The water hovered a little over 50 feet — three feet less than the danger mark of 53 feet — at 8 p.m.

Four boats and a half a dozen swimmers have been deployed along the banks.

As many as 10 families of Kotha Colony, one of the low-lying areas in Bhadrachalam, were shifted to a relief camp set up at a school nearby.
