In a memorandum submitted to President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury sought the President’s intervention to ensure that the Human Resource Development Ministry did not become “Hindu Rashtra Development Ministry.”

Referring to recent developments at the University of Hyderabad (UoH), Mr. Yechury requested the President to remove Appa Rao, Vice-Chancellor of the university, whose return to the campus coincided with a fresh impasse there.

The President is the Visitor — who is the appointing authority in this case — of the university.

“I am approaching you to please intervene and ensure that the HCU [Hyderabad Central University] Vice Chancellor, who took a blatantly anti-Dalit stand, violating all established norms of social inclusion in the university, is removed forthwith,” the memorandum said.

“There is an ongoing dispute with the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor. The students, faculty and the entire university community have been agitating for redressing the circumstances that led to the tragic suicide of a bright research scholar, Rohith Vemula,” the memorandum said.
