Relief for former Goa CM, son in corruption case

A CBI Court here on Saturday granted an interim relief to Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane and his MLA son and former Congress Minister Vishwajit Rane in extortion and corruption case.

The hearing on bail application will come up in the CBI court on Tuesday. Fearing arrest in the investigation of a bribery charge case against them by the special investigation team (SIT) of Goa police, the Congress leaders on Saturday approached CBI court seeking anticipatory bail.

A mining lessee Bhalachandra Naik who runs Dahej Minerals, had publicly charged the he had paid Rs.6 crore to the then Chief Miniser Rane's son Vishwajit in 2008 to allow him to remove extracted ore at Poriem in north Goa. He also alleged that Mr. Rane, demanded Rs.10 crores for facilitating an environment clearance from the Centre to start mining operations at a mine in Poriem constituency represented by Mr. Rane..

The SIT which had suo moto taken cognizance of allegations of bribery through media and after recording statement of Mr. Naik on Thursday registered FIR against the Rane duo.
