The lone Indian who escaped from captivity in Mosul has recounted his daring escape to ICRC, U.N. and Indian officials. Harjeet Singh Bassi is recovering at a U.N. camp in the Kurdish area of Erbil. He hails from Gurdaspur in Punjab and was one of the 40-odd Indian construction workers at a government site in Mosul.
Mr. Bassi recounted how the men had finished dinner on Monday night when armed gunmen walked into the compound and took them captive. The gunmen then transported the group to another site. Mr. Bassi said he was able to escape in the cover of darkness and ran back all the way to the construction site. He said friendly militia in the area then took him to the Erbil-Mosul battle-line. Mr. Bassi spoke to Indian officials, who said some of the details he gave do not match with other accounts.
